Field Notes "1943 Edition" Two-Way Memo Book Limited Edition
Inspired by the compact, horizontally bound notebooks issued by the Armed Services Editions in 1943, this clever Field Notes release offers a twist: it works both ways. Bound along the short edge, each memo book opens comfortably from the top and from the side, giving you the freedom to take quick vertical notes or lay the pages wide for a more cinematic sketch. Whether youâre jotting clues, capturing observations, or mapping out a moment of inspiration, the Two-Way Edition adapts without complaint â a small but satisfyingly versatile companion.

Each 3-Pack includes bright red, yellow, and blue covers printed on sturdy 12pt Westrock Tango stock, while the pages inside feature Domtar Cougar âNaturalâ paper with an âAged Newsprintâ 3/16" graph grid â a quietly nostalgic nod to mid-century print culture.
The Long and Tall of It
Many of our limited editions have explored interesting chapters in the history of American, printing, publishing and design and this one goes deep (and sideways) into just such a story. In 1943, the U.S. government and the American publishing industry collaborated to create what came to be known as the âArmed Services Editions.â Over the next few years, more than 120 million books representing over 1,200 titles were printed and distributed to overseas troops during the Second World War. The books were printed in an odd horizontal format with bright, primary-coloured covers â and that was what caught our attention.
Our Winter 2025 release, the â1943â Edition was inspired by the Armed Service Editions, including three unique âTwo-Wayâ Memo Books plus a new release from Field Notes Brand Books, Dashiell Hammettâs The Maltese Falcon.
